Joel Dillard has practiced law with Bill Baxley for 31 years, initially as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Alabama and, beginning in 1979, as one of the founding partners of the firm which is now Baxley, Dillard, McKnight, James & McElroy. He represented numerous state administrative boards and commissions during his state service, and was called to defend them, and their members, in federal and state trials and subsequent appellate proceedings.
At Baxley, Dillard, McKnight, James & McElroy he often assists Bill Baxley in trial and appellate proceedings. He devotes a majority of his practice to the defense of business clients, but also enjoys diversifying his practice to include representing plaintiffs in civil actions involving constitutional, environmental and business issues, often in disputes arising from state and federal regulatory actions.
He graduated from the University of Alabama's School of Commerce and Business in 1971, and from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1975. Commissioned as a JAG officer in the Alabama Army National Guard, he served 20 years in that part-time capacity, retiring from military service in 1991. He has also been recognized as a Super Lawyer.
